Playing video games online can get expensive, thanks to equipment, Internet connection and subscription costs. This may have an economic impact on a person. Because of the time consumption taken up by video games, less time is dedicated to academic or occupational pursuits. An addicted gamer’s education or work life may suffer, thereby affecting their earning potential.

Treatment for a video game addiction can be similar to alcohol abuse treatment. There are 12-step programs that can help. There are also different types of therapy used for treatment. Because it is a compulsive disorder, medications can also be prescribed to control the addictive behavior.

Because video game addiction can lead to isolation and depression, some doctors recommend treating it with antidepressants. Although many people take these types of drugs safely, there are side effects, such as becoming addicted to the drug or anxiety and irritability.

Although associated with something that is supposed to be entertainment, video game addiction can be just as serious and life altering as other addictions. The first step in treating the problem is recognizing that a problem exists. Parents should monitor their children and look for the signs of addiction.
