Best Survival Horror Games of All Time

Jason

Taking our video game addiction to the next level, tapping into our fears, giving us a rush, and making us do everything to survive the game, survival horror games promise an excellent time to all those seeking out the thrill of being scared.

Whether you’re looking to walk down a corridor infested with evil spirits featured in P.T. or experience the psychologically mind-boggling plot of Silent Hill, there is plenty to choose from when seeking good horror games.  Here is our list of the top horror and survival games of all time:

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard redirected the Resident Evil series back on the right track. Focusing on more action and the Deep South plantation inhabited by a murderous family, the game promises to give you the chills. Taking first-person perspective to a whole new level and bringing you closer to action than ever before, this game definitely deserves a special place amongst the best survival horror games of all time.

Layers of Fear

Offering you the perfect opportunity to step in the shoes of a rather ambitious painter and supported by a rather unique concept, Layers of Fear rightfully earns its place amongst the best scary games.

The game takes place in an exquisite Victorian mansion where the painter (you) continues to work on an art piece and  add new layers to the painting, all the while giving snapshots of the man’s disturbing past. Head out on a journey packed with fear, suspense, and a constantly changing environment with Layers of Fear.

Silent Hill 2

Admit it: Silent Hill 2 on our PS2 meant the world to most of us. Combining suspense, thrill and horror, this game was everyone’s favorite and continues to maintain its reputation. The game follows a tale that takes you on a journey of psychological terror, love, lust, betrayal, and murder and features James Sunderland who receives a letter from his dead wife asking him to meet her in the mysterious town of Silent Hill.

F.E.A.R.

First-person shooter gaming experience meets horror. This game is all about you, a member of an elite unit in body armor who investigates paranormal activity and is equipped with weapons. While F.E.A.R. might perhaps not be a visually scary game, it sure does a good job at building a superbly thrilling atmosphere.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Based on first-person perspective, the game features Daniel exploring a gothic castle with absolutely no memory whatsoever of how he got there. With the main goal of the game being flight as opposed to fight, take control of your greatest fears as you maintain your “sanity” meter by avoiding contact with monsters and surviving your way out of the mysterious castle.

P.T.

Ever played a video game that made you want to throw away your controller and run in fear? This playable teaser by Hideo Kajima is all of that and more. Though short-lived, P.T. has established and maintained its place as one of the best horror video games of recent memory. The plot of the game involves you walking around a haunted corridor with absolutely no idea of what is waiting for you at the end.

The Last of Us

Created exclusively for the PlayStation 3, The Last of Us is truly a masterpiece by Naughty Dog. Explore the remains of a country attacked by some form of modern fungal plague that has taken over the entire human race. Experience scare, horror, and thrill paired with a ride on the emotional roller coaster as Joel and Ellie, the only survivors, try to make it through.

Until Dawn

If games could be awarded as the best horror movie of the year, Until Dawn might just be it. Elevating the gaming industry and taking the horror genre to a newfound level, Until Dawn delivers an extraordinary horror experience and a fantastic narrative.

While we surely believe that the competition remains tough when it comes to deciding which developer has been the most successful at crafting the perfect survival horror experience, let us know in the comments what your top picks are for the best scary games.
